Wild Dog kill during early morning summer drive

This pack of Wild Dogs were found just after sunrise, where they had chased an Impala ewe into a small waterhole. Most animals are wary of entering water sources in the lowveld because of the presence of Nile Crocodiles. The Impala Ewe, however, instinctively jumped into the water as a defence mechanism from the pursuing Wild Dog pack.

A stand-off ensued with the dogs running around the waterhole, trying to find a way to the Impala. After what seemed like an eternity for the Impala ewe, one of the dogs decided to brave the water. It was clear that no Crocodiles were present in the waterhole, as the Impala ewe would have certainly been attacked at some point if there was a Crocodile there. The brave Wild Dog was nervous and attempted entering the water multiple times, only to run back out of the waterhole after a few seconds each time. Eventually, the same Wild Dog attempted to catch the Impala ewe in the waterhole. The dog was successful in getting to the Impala but lost its grip and the Impala ewe broke free. Another Wild Dog from the opposite side of the waterhole then entered the water and chased after the Impala. The second dog was successful in grabbing hold of the ewe and dragging it to the bank where the rest of the pack were waiting. Once the Impala ewe was at the bank the scene played out rather quickly.

Although it is quite a brutal scene, this is nature in its most raw form, and one must respect the natural way of life in the bush. This was an incredible sighting to be able to witness and one which will remembered forever.
