There are some rare species to be found in Africa and many of them can only be found in certain types of habitats. On one morning, we were fortunate enough to encounter two rather rare species.
The first encounter happened whilst driving through a section of thicket. The vehicle was slowly moving through the bush when suddenly a Black Rhino appeared just a short way off the road, to the side of the vehicle. The guide switched off to try not startle the animal any further. This was quite effective as the Black Rhino stayed long enough to allow us to capture some photographs of it. Black Rhino are notoriously irritable animals and often once seen or disturbed, they rush off in a huff and puff, as only a Black Rhino can. To encounter one of these amazing creatures out in the bush is very special to say the least.
After a great rest of the drive, we were fortunate enough to have another rare species encounter. In the rugged Olifants bushveld surrounding the Olifants river, a small antelope species can be found. The Sharpe’s Grysbok calls this area its home and one needs to be in specific areas in order to find one. The safari was already slowly making its way back to the end point when one of these beautiful antelope was spotted next to the road. The reddish coat with grey / white flecks are diagnostic features of this creature. The Sharpe’s Grysbok is often confused with the more commonly found Steenbok. However, the two generally have different habitats which they are found which can also help distinguish between the two. It is always a magic feeling to see a rare species of animal but to encounter two on one safari is definitely something to be noted.
