Waterholes out in the bush provide a lifeline for many species. In the dry season, they can be the only source of water for huge distances and many water dependant animals rely on this drinking water to survive. Animals congregate around these water sources during the dry season, and this provides spectacular game viewing opportunities. Predators can be found lurking around waterholes during this time as prey species are apparent in large numbers. Birds of Prey will also use these waterholes for drinking and cleaning of their feathers.
In the wet season, game tends to spread out in the bush as water is more readily available in seasonal pans and streams. However, waterholes still provide good game viewing opportunities with resident animals such as hippos and crocodiles, as well as general game. Predators can also still be found at waterholes in the wet season as they still provide drinking water, hunting opportunities and they are key points within their territories. Waterholes remain a favourite stop during a safari, no matter the time of year. It is always a good idea to take some time and sit quietly at a waterhole. You never know what might be found around these important points.
